This basic chainsaw safety, maintenance, and awareness course is designed for anyone who works in the forestry or construction industry. Whether you need review or have never operated a chainsaw before, this course will help you feel aware, knowledgeable, and safe while operating a chainsaw at work.

In completing this course you will have an understanding of the chainsaw-use hazards, proper-use of safety gear and equipment, and safe operating procedures.

By understanding how to operate and handle a chainsaw, you can avoid workplace accidents. With 85 per cent of chainsaw accidents caused by kickback, it's important to understand how to manage the different elements of kickback along with the variety of chainsaw-use hazards.

This is an in-company only certificate. It runs for eight hours and is partially in-class, with a portion of the course outside handling the chainsaw and associated safety equipment. The course will be conclude with a 20 question test and is all in accordance with WorkSafe BC.

Course Objectives

  • Working knowledge of the chainsaw

  • Safe operating procedures: start up in accordance with manufacturer specifications, hand placement, proper stance, cutting along procedures

  • Inspection and maintenance: air filters, mixing fuel, spark plugs, changing and filing cha, flagging and taking chain off of service

  • Hazards and dangers

  • Review of accidents

  • Mandatory safety gear and purpose

  • Elements of kickback

  • Safe storage

  • First aid

  • Troubleshooting

Job Shadowing

In completing this course you will have an understanding of safe bucking techniques, safety procedures around heavy machinery, and understand all safety regulations accompanied with working in the field.

Job Shadowing is a 1 to 4 day course for new workers in the forestry industry. With this course, McColl will join you in the field and provide on the job training for safe bucking techniques and running a chainsaw in landings and dry land environments.

Every job scenario is different while working in landings and drylands. The noisy environments mean workers have to be aware of a variety of dynamics including working near heavy machinery such as log loaders, grapple yarders, helicopters, front-end loaders, and logging trucks.

McColl will work side by side with you, observe, and provide corrections for proper and safe work procedures. This advanced course will teach safe bucking techniques, working procedures, and cover the hazards and dangers of working in these dynamic environments so that you can feel aware, safe, and confident in your working environment.
